The University of Iowa (Post-Graduate Program in Translational Biomedicine)

One of only a few clinical graduate programs in the United States, The University of Iowa’s Post-Graduate Program in Translational Biomedicine, or GPTB, trains scientists in the principles and techniques of scholarly, patient-oriented research, including epidemiological and translational research and clinical trials. Supported by the University’s Colleges of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences the Carver College of Medicine, GPTB trainees are able to focus on any of a number of well-funded, interdisciplinary research modules, including those traditionally underrepresented in clinical studies such as radiology, pediatrics, clinical psychology, surgical sub-specialties, anesthesiology, and pharmacy. Additionally, trainees have at their advantage the breadth of resources and facilities that make the University of Iowa a top-ranked institution in health science research, including: a number of well-funded multidisciplinary research programs; The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center; a thriving clinical trials program; an AHRQ-funded primary care research network with 96 community practices and over 300 participating clinicians; and a highly successful General Clinical Research Center, or GCRC. Scholars may also benefit from the fact that the State of Iowa has the most stable population in the country, greatly facilitating long-term clinical studies.
