University of Wisconsin-Madison (Language Institute)

The Institute's mission is to promote the study of languages, literatures, and cultures. Following this mission, it provides information about the wealth of educational opportunities offered by UW-Madison to the campus, Wisconsin K-12 schools, business and the community. It is also the home of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, which provides support to research efforts of the Institute.

The Language Institute is an initiative of the College of Letters and Science, with substantial support from the Division of International Studies. It also benefits greatly from generous support of the Schoenleber Foundation

In 2005-06, the Language Institute will host events, workshops and symposia, and work with departments and area studies programs to facilitate instruction in the 60 plus languages taught at the UW-Madison. Featured series include: World Language Policies and Pedagogical Practices, Languages for Life, Language Teaching Workshops and Brownbags, World Languages Evenings; and for high school students, World Languages Day and Language Connections, as well as World Cinema Day.

The Language Institute also sponsors research circles for faculty and graduate students working in languages, literatures, and cultures, and is making proposals to federal and private agencies for expanded projects. It is also involved with materials development and is actively studying the feasibility of enhancing the study of less commonly taught languages through online instruction.
