In an age that is witnessing the globalization of the American consciousness, translation studies represents an exciting new educational epistemology uniquely attuned to the times. In the United States, now officially the sixth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, Spanish is spoken by roughly ten percent of the total population of 245 million people. Such data, in conjunction with demographic forecasts, provide compelling reasons--globally, hemispherically and nationally--for the pairing of English and Spanish in a translation studies program such as the one offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University.
