San Diego State University (Department of Spanish and Portuguese )
In an age that is witnessing the globalization of the American consciousness, translation studies represents an exciting new educational epistemology uniquely attuned to the times. In addressing the necessity and possibilities of cross-linguistic, cross-cultural communication, translation studies acknowledges the rich mosaic of diversity and plurality existing within an interdependent global community. In short, translation studies responds to the notion that communication between peoples of different tongues is and always has been one of the great motors of history and human development.
English, with some 430 million speakers, is the second most spoken language in the world. Spanish, with some 320 million speakers, is the fourth most spoken language. In the American hemisphere, broadly speaking from the Queen Elizabeth Islands to Tierra del Fuego, English and Spanish account for approximately eighty percent of the language used. In the United States, now officially the sixth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, Spanish is spoken by roughly ten percent of the total population of 245 million people. Such data, in conjunction with demographic forecasts, provide compelling reasons--globally, hemispherically and nationally--for the pairing of English and Spanish in a translation studies program such as the one offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University.
Translation studies is a field of intellectual endeavor with a great range of practical applications, especially in a location such as southern California. Whether operating within the realm of technology transfer (pragmatic and technical translation), knowledge transfer (scholarly translation) or cultural and aesthetic transfer (literary translation), translation studies hones reading and writing skills that are essential assets in the successful pursuit of virtually any profession or employment.
