As might be expected in an age of globalization, the need for commercial translation is growing rapidly. Every multinational company and organization uses translation services. Many companies now have translators on staff. Occupational Outlook Quarterly, published quarterly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, reported in its Summer 2002 issue that employment in the field of translation is expected to increase steadily, with a growth rate of about 24 per cent expected for the 2000-2010 decade.
There were 22,000 reported jobs in translation as of the year 2000, but many opportunities for translators go unreported. Much of the translation currently being undertaken in corporate settings, where the demand for translation is growing most rapidly, is being accomplished by untrained bilingual employees. Without training in what translation really implies, these individuals can actually create more problems than they solve, as anyone knows who has tried to build something with poorly translated directions from symbolic Chinese or Korean, or word-for-word from Swedish or German. In many cases, the translator in such cases does not understand what makes a translation good, let alone how to execute one.
To enter the Translation Studies Certificate Program, you already must read and speak two languages fluently. The program develops your skill at translating from one of these languages into the other to a high professional level.
