French Professional Development Online Translation Courses
(Courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester and occasionally in the Summer term. Course descriptions and online registration for French courses become available in late spring or early summer for Fall courses, by November for Spring courses, and by April for Summer courses. See description of courses offered below.)
The French Professional Development Online Translation Courses are designed for those interested in French education or a career in French translation. The internet web-based format allows students to benefit from the expertise of the Department of French at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign regardless of location. The courses may be taken for graduate academic credit (2 semester hours for each course) as individual courses or as part of a professional development certificate sequence in translation.
A certificate of completion is available for students who complete two courses in translation (French 419 and 421) and three courses on other topics. This sequence of courses for professional development in translation combines general courses on linguistic contrasts between French and English with a selection of other courses, both general (Theory of Translation, Terminology and Lexicology) and more specific (Commercial French, Scientific and Technical French, InterNef Internet Resources for Teachers of French, and other topics). The goal is to give participants three essential advanced language skills to be able to use French in professional contexts:
1. Linguistic knowledge of contrasts between the two languages; 2. Procedures that facilitate translation work; and 3. Cultural background and technical language in specific domains.
